Police recover stolen G3 rifle after mob attack in Thika East
Police in Kiambu recovered a G3 rifle, magazines and 68 rounds after a fatal mob attack in Munyu, Thika East, linking the weapon to an earlier armoury theft at Maguguni Patrol Base.
Police in Kiambu on Thursday recovered a firearm from the scene of a mob attack on an armed individual in Munyu area of Thika East.
While confirming the incident, the police said they received information of the altercation from the local administration and deployed officers from Munyu Police Station who rushed to the scene and found the individual had been fatally injured in the mob attack.
Upon assessing the scene, they recovered a G3 rifle along with two magazines, loaded with 68 rounds of ammunition, additional blank rounds, a penknife, and other assorted items.
"The firearm and ammunition have been secured and placed in police custody for further forensic and ballistic analysis. Preliminary inquiries indicate that the recovered firearm is linked to a previous incident involving the loss of a police firearm within the Sub-County," National Police Service (NPS) confirmed on Friday.
The NPS said investigations into the circumstances surrounding both incidents are ongoing.
"The NPS appeals to members of the public to refrain from acts of mob injustice and instead to report suspected criminal activities to law enforcement authorities for appropriate and lawful action. The Service continues to encourage public cooperation in the ongoing efforts to recover illegal firearms and enhance national security," the service urged.
Earlier, on October 29, two loaded rifles were stolen from Maguguni Patrol base in the same region following an armoury breakage that occurred under mysterious circumstances.
According to a police report, OB 02/29/10/2025, the night report office personnel reported that on that day, at around 4:00 am, they conducted a patrol of the base compound and the area adjacent to a local church. After hearing dogs barking, they rushed in that direction.
Upon returning to the report office, one officer observed that an iron sheet from the armoury had been removed. On inspection, he discovered that the padlock securing the armoury had been broken.
"When he went inside, he found the armoury steel box opened and noticed that the following were missing: One AK-47 rifle with two fully loaded magazines of special 30 rounds each to make a total of 60 rounds, one G3 rifle with one fully loaded magazine of 20 rounds, and also two empty magazines and 96 rounds," the report added.
He reported the incident to his seniors, who assessed the scene at Maguguni Patrol Base, after which a search began for the stolen arms and ammunition.
